Built to be a defending stronghold in 1537, Gripsholm Castle is an imposing historic castle near the beautiful small town Mariefred, on the shores of Lake Mälaren. Also known as Gustav Vasa’s castle, it boasts historic, romantic buildings and stunning royal grounds and deer paddock which you can experience over four hundred years of Swedish history.

Walk through chambers and passages of this historic castle and see the preserved artefacts such as Hertig Karl’s 16th-century chambers and Gustav III’s theatre, one of Europe’s best preserved 18th-century theatres. Grispsholm Castle is also home to Swedish State’s collection of portraits with 4000 different works and portraits since the days of Gustav Vasa.
